Director Leon Vance, Not So Heartless.

(Image via tvguide.com)

Since I started watching NCIS, there has been a change in command. What I mean by this is that there has been a change in the Director of NCIS. When I began watching the show, Director Jenny Shephard was in charge. When she was killed off Assistant Director Lean Vance took her place as the Director.

In an earlier post, I stated that I didn't like Director Leon Vance. When he took Jennie's place I immediately  thought he was double-crossing everyone. I also thought that he didn't have heart. The main reason is that, when he first started as the NCIS Director, he separated the team. He sent Tony to work on a Navy ship, Ziva was sent back to Israel, and McGee was sent to work in the Cyber Crime Unit.

Thankfully the team came back together. At the end of season six, Ziva left the team and was taken hostage. In the beginning of this season when the team wanted to get Ziva back he didn't do anything. That alone, added to my not liking him.

I saw him in a different light in last weeks episode titled "Endgame," in which he shows his human, softer side. There was a specific incident that brought this change, and that was because Lee Wuan Kai whom he has been chasing for a long time, has returned.

When he first realized that she was back,Vance began remembering when he first had contact with Kai, and when she killed his partner. His softer, human side first emerges when he is talking to Gibbs about Kai killing his partner, and how he was left with just a bullet wound. Seeing Vance show his feelings has caused me to change my view of him. I no longer see him as heartless, I now see him as someone who has feelings, and does in fact care about people.

All that said, I am still not happy with the fact that he split up the team when he first started, and that he would not have any part in getting Ziva back in the beginning of this season. I see now that he was not doing it out of spite, or dislike for the other NCIS team members, but rather that he was only doing his job. So I can honestly say that instead of seeing Vance as a cold heartless individual, I now see him as someone who has a heart, and cares about people.

  1. Hey Mary,
There was a director in charge before Jenny Shepard; when the character of Kate was still on the show too. I don't recall his name, but he did exist. Jenny Shepard came on the same time Ziva's character arrived. ;o)

  3. PS...he split up the team to try and uncover a mole in NCIS, and while I agree it was kinda sucky for them to be apart, he did it for a good sound reason. It was a decision and action taken that someone in his type of job - in the real world - might really have to make. As watchers of a beloved TV show we get very attached to the characters - especially when they are written and acted as well as they are on NCIS. However, we must also remember that they are fictionalizing a real job, and as with any job out there, there are parts of it that we don't like. His decision to seperate the team, I think, was made for sound directorial reasons. Except, perhaps, Tony's extended absence.

(And I still like him more than Jenny ... tee hee.)
